Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind

— Yoga Sutras 1.2 —

What is yoga?

The word ‘yoga’, in Sanskrit, means ‘union’ or ‘integration’. The 5000-year-old tradition stems from India, where posture and breath work helped prepare students for the higher practices of meditation. But modern Westerners have equally embraced yoga’s benefits as antidotes to our sedentary, results-driven, fast-paced lives. Yoga brings us back in our bodies, settles our busy minds, calms our emotions.

Asana (postures) restore our natural flexibility and range of motion, and increase our strength, stamina, coordination, and balance. Pranayama (breathing exercises) improve respiratory fitness and help gather our minds. Dharana (concentration) and Dhyana (meditation) techniques reduce restlessness and offer insight in our thinking and emoting habits. Relaxation triggers the body’s Rest and Digest response where our daily lives may provide little opportunity

Is yoga for me?

Yes, yoga is for everyone! A common misconception is that you ‘have to be fit and flexible’ to do yoga. This is a Western, performance-oriented perspective. The invitation in yoga is to work with what you have and from where you are. At your own pace and with understanding of your individual strengths and limitations. With non-competitiveness, curiosity, and patience.

It’s our attitude that makes yoga yoga, not the length of our hamstrings or a pretty performance. And while bodies and minds vary widely, this attitude everybody can develop! It is well worth looking around to find a class and a teacher that meet your needs, and then giving yoga a fair amount of time to grow on you. I hope that it will!

I arrived in Reading in 2002, with a background in Dutch linguistics and language teaching, and two young children. I started training with the British Wheel of Yoga, and have been teaching in the Reading and Bracknell area since 2005. I have been inspired by senior teachers from different traditions, in and outside yoga – such as Tai Chi, Buddhism, Mindfulness, and Psychology. Over time, my approach shifted from pose to person. As we roll out our mats, we also unfold our relationship with ourselves; our bodies, our hearts, and minds. Each pose and each practice can be an encounter, where a subtle balance of effort and comfort, challenge and ease can be found. Discovering this takes yoga well beyond the muscles and the mat.
